About

Pet Donor is Veterinary Tissue Bank’s pet donor register in the UK. Veterinary Tissue Bank was established in 2009 by veterinary surgeons, Professor John Innes and Dr Peter Myint. This was in response to a need for veterinary patients to receive tissue transplants and a lack of a national donor scheme for pets. A coordinated scheme allows for maximum benefit to dogs and cats that need these transplants.

Signing up to the Pet Donor Register allows us to contact your veterinary surgeon so that it is recorded that you have thought about tissue donation when your dog or cat passes away. This will inform your vet to have the discussion with you when that day comes. We will also issue you with a Pet Donor card for your records but you will still need to provide informed consent at the time of donation.

Following consent to tissue donation, Veterinary Tissue Bank organise medical assessment of donors to ensure suitability for donation. We then organise collection of remains, harvest of tissues and cremation. If you wish, we also arrange private cremation and return of ashes. All donors are treated
with the utmost respect and we operate to the highest ethical standards. There are no costs to petowners for donation; the costs involved with tissue donation are covered by the recipients.
